Knife and Sword Gift Guide

The best blade gift matches how the person will actually use it: a fixed-blade Damascus knife with a sheath for a hunter, a chef knife or ulu for someone who cooks, a katana and a display stand for a collector, or a compact OTF or folding knife for everyday carry. Below are ideas for each, with details taken straight from our product listings, plus what to check before you give a blade as a gift.

For the hunter

Hunters and campers usually want a fixed blade of a manageable size that rides securely on a belt. Our Damascus hunting knife listings include a leather sheath, and many say it allows vertical or horizontal carry. For help choosing, see how to choose a hunting knife.

See the full Hunting Knives collection for more handle materials and sizes.

For the home cook

For someone who cooks, a knife they will reach for every day makes a better gift than one that stays in a drawer. Our Damascus kitchen knife guide compares the options.

  • Chef Knife Handmade with Damascus Steel, Rose Wood Handle: 12 inches overall with a 7-inch blade and a rosewood handle. The listing describes it for slicing, chopping and dicing vegetables, meat and fish, and says it comes with a leather sheath with a snap closure and belt loop, packaged in a gift box.
  • Premium Ulu Knife, Damascus Pizza Cutter: a curved rocking blade for herbs and pizza, 6 inches overall with a 5-inch blade, a camel bone and bull horn handle and a leather sheath.

For the collector: swords and stands

Many of our swords are listed with stainless steel blades, and several with a factory edge. Treat them as display and collector pieces unless a listing states otherwise; our article on decorative vs functional swords explains the difference.

  • Black Samurai Katana Sword LE-85BK: 37 inches without the scabbard (41 inches with it), a 26.5-inch stainless steel blade and a black hardwood handle.
  • All Gold Samurai Katana Sword LE-59GD: 36.5 inches without the scabbard, a 26.5-inch stainless steel factory edge blade and a leather-wrapped plastic handle. The listing says it comes with a display stand, so it is ready to show as soon as it is unwrapped.

A stand is a good gift on its own for someone who already owns swords:

For everyday-carry fans

Everyday carry (EDC) knives are compact and ride in a pocket or on a belt. OTF (out-the-front) knives deploy the blade straight out of the front of the handle; folding knives swing open from the side.

Laws on automatic knives and concealed blades vary by location. Before buying an OTF or automatic knife as a gift, check the law where the recipient lives and carries. The American Knife and Tool Institute keeps a reference on automatic knife laws, but always confirm with current local law. More options are in OTF Knives.

Gifting a blade: age 18+ and local laws

  • Age: our Damascus knife listings state "Must be 18+ to purchase; no sales to minors." Whatever you buy, a blade is not a gift for a minor.
  • Local law: rules on owning and carrying knives and swords differ from place to place, especially for automatic knives and concealed blades. The recipient needs to be able to own and carry what you give them legally.
  • Safety: include the sheath, scabbard or stand, and keep blades out of reach of children.

Packaging

What arrives in the box depends on the product. Based on the listings above:

Where to go next

If you are still deciding, start with how the person will use the blade: outdoors, in the kitchen, on display or in a pocket. Each collection linked above lets you compare sizes and handle materials, and every product listing gives its measurements and what is included.
