Mini vs Full-Size OTF Knives: Which Size Is Right?
A mini OTF is the one to pick if you want the smallest knife in your pocket; a mid-size OTF of around 7" overall is the all-rounder; a full-size OTF of 9" and up gives you the most blade and the biggest handle, usually carried in a sheath. In our range, mini OTFs are listed at 5" to 5.5" overall, mid-size models at 6.75" to 7.25", and the largest at 9" to 11". Here is how to read the measurements and match a size to how you will carry it.
How size is measured

Our OTF listings describe size with these measurements:
- Overall length: the full length with the blade out and locked. This is the size shown in many product titles, and every size figure in this article refers to it unless stated otherwise.
- Closed length: the length of the handle with the blade retracted. This is what goes in your pocket. Many listings give it, but not all.
- Blade length: given on only a few listings.
Because an OTF blade slides straight out of the front of the handle, the difference between overall and closed length gives you a rough idea of how much blade extends. On the listings that give all three figures, the numbers line up: the Mini OTF, Black Dagger Blade, Black Aluminum Handle (LE-114BKD) is 5.25" overall, 3.25" closed, with a 2" blade. If blade length matters to you, including because some local laws set blade-length limits, ask us to confirm it for the model you want.
Mini OTFs
Mini OTFs are titled "Mini OTF" in our store and are listed as best for "compact everyday carry". Examples from current listings:
- LE-114BKD: 5.25" overall, 3.25" closed, 2" black stainless steel dagger blade, aluminum handle with pocket clip.
- LE-555HKBK: 5" overall, 3.25" closed, black stainless steel dagger blade, zinc alloy handle with pocket clip.
- LE-237PKSP: 5.5" overall, 3.65" closed, stainless steel half-serrated dagger blade, zinc alloy handle with pocket clip.
Choose a mini if you want something that disappears in a pocket and you mainly need a small blade for light everyday tasks.
Mid-size (around 7")
Many of our OTFs sit in this range, listed as best for "EDC, tactical use, and outdoor adventures". Examples:
- LE-112SBKDP: 7" overall, 4.15" closed, black and satin two-tone stainless steel dagger blade, zinc alloy handle, MOLLE nylon sheath included.
- LE-291SBKCFDB: 6.75" overall, 4" closed, 2.75" 440 stainless steel double-edge dagger blade, pocket clip.
A mid-size OTF gives you a noticeably longer handle to hold than a mini while still carrying on a pocket clip. Many of these listings also include a nylon sheath or pouch.
Larger and full-size (8" to 11")
Above 7" our listings step up to 8" and 8.75", then 9", 10" and 11" overall. Examples:
- LE-118WFMC: 8.75" overall, 5.25" closed, stainless steel dagger blade, pocket clip and MOLLE nylon sheath.
- LE-9929LMR: 9" overall, 5.5" closed, stainless steel dagger blade with American flag print, MOLLE nylon sheath.
- LE-189BK: 10" overall, stainless steel blade.
- LE-117LWD: 11" overall, stainless steel blade, wood handle, sheath included.
A full-size OTF gives the largest grip and the most blade, but a 5.25" to 5.5" closed length is a lot to fit in a pocket, which is why many of these listings include a sheath.
Pocket fit and carry
- Use closed length for pocket fit. Measure the depth of the pocket you use and compare it with the listed closed length.
- Check what is included. Each listing says whether the knife has a pocket clip and whether a nylon sheath or pouch is included. Some sheaths are listed as MOLLE or MOLLE-compatible, for attaching to compatible gear.
- Think about your hand. A mini's closed length of around 3.25" is also the length of handle you hold when the blade is out; a full-size gives you over 5".
- Blade shape changes the feel. Size is only half the choice; see OTF Blade Shapes Explained.
Size chooser
| Size (overall) | Closed length (listing examples) | Typical carry | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini, 5"–5.5" | 3.25"–3.65" | Pocket clip | Smallest pocket footprint, light everyday tasks |
| Mid-size, 6.75"–7.25" | 4"–4.15" | Pocket clip, many with nylon sheath or pouch | All-round everyday carry |
| Larger, 8"–8.75" | 5.25" (LE-118WFMC) | Pocket clip and/or sheath | More grip and blade, still clip-carry on some models |
| Full-size, 9"–11" | 5.5" (LE-9929LMR) | Sheath on many models | Largest grip and blade, belt or gear carry |
Whatever size you choose, laws on automatic knives vary by location and can include blade-length limits, so check the rules where you live and carry.
